L'Orfeo and Elysium

Based on the early opera L'Orfeo, which itself was indebted to the Greek legend of Orpheus, "L'Orfeo and Elysium" is a modern-day fable about a young woman searching for her vanished brother in the hope of restoring normality to her hometown, which is mysteriously decaying in his absence. A full-on fantasy complete with magic and monsters, "L'Orfeo" is something of a departure for Papercookie after the ensemble character humor of "Neutral" and the quiet rural drama of "Passenger Pigeons", but it's also an attempt to drag classic mythology into the independent age, replacing titan-sized special effects with contemplative character study and a DIY aesthetic built on original concepts, home-stitched costumes, and creative performers.

The first feature from writer-director Aubrey Curtis, "L'Orfeo and Elysium" is currently shooting in Greenville, South Carolina, and is expected to hit the festival circuit as early as this fall.
